Cash App for tips, GigTag for everything around them

When you guest with a DJ or front a small band, the crowd wants to ask for songs, find you again and book you for their own night. GigTag gives you one printed code that does all three, opened with a phone camera. Cash App, which you searched for, is a payment app that performers use to be paid by the audience.

  • One code that never changes

Why GigTag

What GigTag gives you around a Cash App tip

A cashtag gets you paid. A GigTag gets you asked: for a song, for your next date, for a booking. It is a page built for a live act, on a tag in your own design, with a code that never changes. It takes card tips too, and your cashtag can stay for fans who prefer it.

  1. 1

    Open requests for any song

Turn on open requests and the audience can type any title. It appears in a live queue on your phone, ready to pass to the DJ or the band. You can also keep requests to your own song list. Either way you choose what is played. Requests are part of Pro.

  2. 2

People can book you there and then

Your page has a booking enquiry form. Someone planning a party sends the date before they leave the lounge, and you read it on the GigTag app on the way home. On Pro you invoice in your own design, and GigTag takes no commission on bookings.

  3. 3

A page that says who you are

A scan opens your act's page: your socials, your website, your music links and your next gig. For a player who appears as a guest on other people's nights, that is how the room can learn your name and find you again.

  4. 4

    No app for anyone

The audience points a camera at the tag and the page opens in the browser. No app, no account and nothing to download. It works the same for every phone in the room, which matters in a dark, busy venue.

  5. 5

    Several acts, one account

If you play solo, guest with a DJ and front a band, Pro keeps each as its own act on one account, with its own page and code. The free plan covers one act, including the tag design and print file.

In short

Cash App and GigTag, in four lines

  • Cash App is a payment app, and performers show its QR code or their cashtag so audiences can tip.
  • GigTag gives the room a way to request any song, into a live queue on your phone.
  • A GigTag page shows who you are, where you play next and how to book you.
  • Our recommendation: add GigTag for requests, bookings and card tips, and keep your cashtag for fans who use it.

A Cash App alternative

Where GigTag is different from Cash App

  1. A cashtag and a page of your own

A cashtag tells the audience where to send money. A GigTag tag opens a page about your act: your song list for requests, your next gig and weekly residencies, your socials, website and music links, and a booking enquiry form. It opens in the phone's browser when the QR code is scanned, with no app, no account and nothing to download for the fan.

  2. What you see during the set

With a payment app you see payments. With GigTag you see a live queue of song requests on your phone, in the GigTag app or on the website. A fan picks from your list, or asks for anything if you open requests, and the song appears while you are still playing. Requests are part of GigTag Pro and work in the US, the UK and everywhere else.

  3. GigTag tips in the US and UK

GigTag does take tips, by card or Apple Pay into the performer's own Stripe account, or Ziina account in the UAE, with 0% taken by GigTag. That works in the United States and the United Kingdom, where Cash App is used, too. Think of it as the tool for requests, dates, bookings and card tips, with your cashtag still there for fans who prefer it.

A night with GigTag

A sax player alongside the DJ

It is a lounge night: a DJ on the decks, you on saxophone playing over the top for two long sets. The room is dark and busy. Your GigTag tag is on the mic stand, catching the light. Between tunes a group near the booth scans it. Your page opens in their browser and one of them sends a request, typed in, because you have opened requests for tonight. It appears in the live queue on your phone and you pass the title to the DJ.

Sax over a DJ is the sort of thing people want at their own party, and this is where the tag earns its keep. A woman planning a launch event sends a booking enquiry from your page before she leaves. A couple add your next date at this lounge to their calendar. You read the enquiry on the GigTag app in the taxi. Your cashtag is still on the little card by your case for the regulars who use it.

About Cash App

What is Cash App?

Cash App is a payment app: people use it to send and receive money. Nothing about it is specific to music, but performers have put it to work at gigs by showing a Cash App QR code, or the cashtag that identifies their account, so that the audience can tip. It is used in the United States and the United Kingdom. For how accounts work and what they cost, see its site.

At a gig it comes down to a sign. You write your cashtag where people can read it, or display your code where a phone camera can reach it, and mention it once or twice from the stage. Someone who wants to tip pays you in the app. That is the whole arrangement, and its simplicity is the point. We have kept to the basics here on purpose.

How Cash App works

  1. 1

Have Cash App. Cash App is a payment app for sending and receiving money, so the starting point is your own account in it. See its site for how to open one.

  2. 2

Show the code or cashtag. Performers show their Cash App QR code, or tell people their cashtag from the stage, so that the audience knows exactly where a tip should go.

  3. 3

The audience tips. A person who wants to tip uses the code or the cashtag to send you money through Cash App. For anything beyond that, see its site.

Who Cash App is for

  • Sending money to people. Cash App is described first as a payment app: a way for one person to send money to another and for that person to receive it. Its use at gigs follows directly from that plain purpose.

  • Performers taking tips. Performers often put it to work for tips. They show their QR code on a sign or announce their cashtag, and people in the audience who use the app send what they would once have dropped in a jar.

  • Audiences in two countries. Cash App is used in the United States and the United Kingdom. A performer whose audience is in either country is who this applies to. For other countries, and for the rules in each, check its own site.

The verdict

GigTag or Cash App: which should you choose?

The bottom line

If you play live, add a GigTag. The strongest reason is that it gives the audience a way to reach you as an act: to request a song, to find your next date and to book you, from one scan with no app. Cash App remains a simple way to be tipped in the US and UK, and GigTag takes card tips beside it, into your own Stripe account. Keep the cashtag for fans who use it and the tag for the rest.

Yes, and in the US or UK it is the natural setup. Keep your cashtag or code for tips. Use GigTag for song requests, your gigs and residencies and booking enquiries, and add your Cash App link to your GigTag page so one scan covers both. If being paid is all you want from the night, Cash App alone is enough.

  1. Step 1

    Keep the cashtag

Fans who tip with Cash App can carry on doing so, and GigTag card tips can sit beside it. Keep the sign or the little card you already use for it.

  2. Step 2

    Add the GigTag tag

Make your GigTag page, add your song list, your dates and your links, and put the tag on the mic stand for requests and booking enquiries.

  3. Step 3

    Tidy it into one scan

If you want a single code on stage, add your Cash App link to your GigTag links and let the one tag lead people to both.

Questions

Cash App and GigTag: what people ask

Something else? Ask us. A person reads every message.

Is GigTag better than Cash App for a live performer?

They do different jobs, and for the performing side GigTag is the one built for it. It gives you a live queue of requests, a page with your links and gigs, and a booking enquiry form, with no commission on bookings. Cash App is a payment app. Keep it for fans who tip with it, and let GigTag take card tips.

Why add GigTag when my Cash App code already gets me paid?

Because being paid is one part of a gig. A GigTag code lets the room request songs, save your next gig to their calendar, follow your links and send a booking enquiry. The free plan covers the page, the tag design, links, gigs and the enquiry form, so you can try it beside your cashtag at the next gig.

Can musicians take tips with Cash App?

Performers often show their Cash App QR code or cashtag at gigs so the audience can tip them in the app. Cash App is a general payment app, so check its own site for the rules and costs that apply to your account, and for which countries it supports.

Is GigTag a Cash App alternative for tips?

It can be. GigTag tips go by card or Apple Pay into your own Stripe account, or your own Ziina account in the UAE, and GigTag takes 0%. That works in the US and UK too. It can also work beside Cash App: GigTag for requests, gigs, booking enquiries and card tips, Cash App for fans who prefer it.

Can I show my Cash App details on my GigTag page?

Your GigTag page has space for your socials, website and music links, and you can add your Cash App link there. A fan scans the tag on your mic stand, requests a song or checks your next gig, and can follow the link to tip you in Cash App.

I already have a Cash App sign. Why add a GigTag tag?

Because they do different things. The Cash App sign gets you tipped. The GigTag tag gets you song requests in a live queue, followers who know your next gig and weekly residencies, and booking enquiries from people in the room. The code is permanent: rename the act and old links still work.

Can a musician who plays with a DJ use GigTag?

Yes. GigTag is for any live act, and a player who guests with a DJ can have their own page and tag. If you open requests, the audience can type any song, which suits a night without a fixed set list. On Pro, one account can also hold more than one act.

Can people request any song, or only ones on my list?

You choose. A fan can pick from the song list on your GigTag page, and if you open requests they can type anything. Either way the request lands in the live queue on your phone, and what gets played is up to you. Song requests are part of GigTag Pro.

Is Cash App available in the UK?

Yes: Cash App is used in the United Kingdom as well as the United States, so a UK performer can check its site for how it works there. GigTag works in the UK too, for requests, gigs, links, booking enquiries, invoices and tips into your own Stripe account.

What is a cashtag, and do I need one for GigTag?

A cashtag identifies a Cash App account, and performers share theirs so people can tip. You do not need one for GigTag. Fans scan the tag for requests, your dates, your links and a booking enquiry form, with no payment app involved, and you can add a Cash App link if you have one.
