In Spain
In Spain the printing is cheap. The paperwork is the expensive part.
Spain is one of the better places in Europe to run a machine: the electricity is below the EU average and filament is easy to get. What stops most Spanish printer owners is not the cost of a print, it is that selling regularly means becoming autónomo, and that has a monthly price whether you sell anything or not.
- Costs in euros
- What autónomo really costs
- Where Spaniards sell
In short
In Spain, PLA runs about 15 to 22 euros a kilo and electricity sits below the EU average of roughly 29 cents a kilowatt hour, so a print is cheap to make. The catch is the autónomo system: selling as a regular activity means registering and paying a monthly social security cuota, though new freelancers can use the tarifa plana at about 80 euros a month for the first year.
Filament and power
What a print costs a Spanish printer
PLA lands at roughly 15 to 22 euros a kilo delivered from the Spanish and EU sellers, so 1.5 to 2.2 cents a gram. A 70 g print is about 1.05 to 1.55 euros of plastic.
Spanish household electricity sits below the EU average, and the gap with a German or Irish printer is real money over a year of long prints. A five-hour print at 120 W is 0.6 kWh — somewhere around 12 to 18 cents on most Spanish tariffs.
If you are on a time-of-use tariff, and most Spanish households are, start long prints in the cheap hours. Nothing else in this guide will cut your running costs by as much for as little effort.
Eurostat put the EU average household electricity price at about 29 cents a kilowatt hour in the second half of 2025, with Ireland and Germany highest at roughly 40 and 39. Your own tariff is the only one that matters, so take it off your bill, or put a 10-euro plug meter on the printer for a week.
Postage
Correos and the courier comparison sites
Correos is the default and rarely the cheapest. The courier comparison sites, booking SEUR, GLS or MRW for you, usually beat the counter price for a small parcel, and dropping at a parcel point beats collection.
- Peninsular and not. The Balearics, the Canaries, Ceuta and Melilla are priced differently, and the Canaries involve customs. Quote them separately or say you do not post there.
- Design for the smallest tier. The jump between size bands costs more than most prints are worth.
- Collection beats the Post Office queue once you are sending more than a couple a week.
Autónomo
The autónomo question, honestly
Spain has no comfortable small-earnings allowance of the kind Britain and Germany have. Selling as a habitual activity means registering with Hacienda and with social security as autónomo, and the social security cuota is monthly whether you sold anything that month or not.
What softens it is the tarifa plana for new freelancers: about 80 euros a month, nearer 87.80 with the MEI surcharge, for the first twelve months, with 2026 rates frozen at 2025 levels. That is roughly 1,050 euros across a first year before income tax, which is the number your side income has to clear before it is worth anything.
Which is why in Spain, more than anywhere else in this series, a handful of cheap printed novelties is not a business. Work out what the year costs you first, then decide what you need to charge. Figures checked in October 2026; confirm with Seguridad Social and the Agencia Tributaria, and talk to a gestor.
What pays here
Where Spanish printer owners actually sell
Wallapop and Milanuncios carry the casual local trade; Etsy and Amazon reach beyond Spain but bring you into the same crowded categories as everyone else. The reliable money is the same as everywhere: businesses. Hospitality fittings, replacement parts for machines nobody supports, signage, prototype parts for small workshops.
Spain's seasonal tourist economy is worth a thought: bars, beach clubs and hotels replace small broken fittings constantly and will pay for same-week. That is work no marketplace seller can take from you. The filter is in what actually sells.
Printing GigTags
Printing GigTags from Spain
We make GigTag, the QR tag a live musician clamps to a mic stand: the audience scans it to request a song, tip, follow or book them. Every tag is a 3D print, 94 g of PLA and about 3 h 51 m with its clamp, and we pay the person who prints and posts one rather than shipping plastic across the world.
Straight answer first: the tag sells in Spain today, posted from our printer in the United Kingdom with the postage on the order, and we want a Spanish printer so it is printed and posted at home instead. We pay £9.99 a tag in the UK and the same rate in euros in the euro area, agreed in writing before anything is printed.
There is no fee at any point, no kit to buy and no territory to license. The GigTag franchise page for Spain has the sum in euros at Spanish prices, what the print needs and the form, in Spanish; the first printer in Spain who runs the test plate well gets the Spanish orders.
Questions
In Spain: your questions
Do I need to be autónomo to sell 3D prints in Spain?
If you are selling as a regular, habitual activity, yes: registration with Hacienda and with social security. Spain has no equivalent of the British trading allowance for ongoing trade. The tarifa plana softens the first year at about 80 euros a month. Check with a gestor — this is not advice.
How much does it cost to run a 3D printer in Spain?
Below the European average. Filament is around 1.5 to 2.2 cents a gram and electricity sits under the EU average of about 29 cents a kilowatt hour, so a five-hour print costs roughly 12 to 18 cents to power. Print in the cheap band of a time-of-use tariff and it falls further.
Where do people sell 3D prints in Spain?
Wallapop and Milanuncios for local and casual sales, Etsy and Amazon to reach further, and directly to businesses for the work that actually pays — hospitality fittings, replacement parts, signage and small-run prototypes.
Is it worth printing for money in Spain at all?
It is, once you count the autónomo year as a fixed cost and price for it. What does not work is a few euros of margin on novelty prints: that cannot carry a monthly cuota. Business work, local and urgent, can.
Can I print GigTags in Spain?
Yes. The tag sells in Spain and is posted from the UK today, which is the postage and the wait we want to remove. Apply on the GigTag franchise page for Spain, which has what we pay in euros and what a tag costs to print and post here. No fee, then or ever.
